Crossave tells you what it really costs: shipping, duty and VAT already in the total.
A genuine, well-graded card can still lose value quickly if it is stored badly — and buying from abroad raises the risk: the card has travelled further, often in packing materials you did not choose. This guide covers what to do the moment it arrives, whatever the seller wrapped it in.
The least visible and most underrated risk is the PVC sleeve, sometimes used by less careful sellers because it is cheaper. It looks like ordinary plastic, but over time it releases plasticisers that react with the ink and the card stock, slowly burning it — a slow but real form of damage, not an immediate one. Safe sleeves are polypropylene, explicitly labelled "PVC-free" and "acid-free". If a card arrives in a sleeve you are not sure about, re-sleeve it straight away in a proper archival sleeve rather than waiting.
For modern cards the standard format is a 35pt toploader with a penny sleeve inside — the most common combination for Pokémon, Magic, sports cards and other TCGs. One common mistake: never seal a toploader with tape stuck directly to it — the adhesive residue is hard to remove and peeling it off can stress the card inside; close the toploader in a resealable team bag instead. Already-graded cards (PSA/BGS/CGC slabs) are well protected in themselves, but they can scratch each other: keep them in magnetic cases or boxes with dedicated dividers, ideally with UV-blocking panels if they are on display.

For larger collections, binders with side-loading pages (the pockets open from the side, not the top) stop cards sliding out as you turn the pages — slightly more expensive, but they avoid the classic surprise of finding your most valuable card at the bottom of the binder. The rest applies to everything: a stable temperature (roughly 16-20°C / 61-68°F), moderate humidity (45-55%), and above all no sharp seasonal swings, which over time can warp cards — an interior room beats a garage or a loft.
